Govt, ACC appeal against his bail orders; NBR sues Moudud, Pintu
Source: The Daily Star

The possibility of Tarique Rahman’s release hit a fresh snag yesterday after the government and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) appealed against the High Court (HC) bail orders in seven of the 13 cases filed against him.

With this shift in the government’s policy regarding release of high-profile prisoners, immediate release of detained former prime minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, which is associated with the release of her eldest son Tarique, has also become unlikely.

The latest development has caused huge frustration among BNP leaders and activists who had been expecting that Khaleda and Tarique, also the senior secretary general of the party, would come out free anytime. Read more…

All efforts to contain price hike frustrated
Staff CorrespondentDespite the chief adviser’s directive to monitor the prices of daily necessities, no measures are proving effective as the prices of essentials are increasing at a high rate across the country frustrating all the government and non-government efforts to contain prices.

In the city kitchen markets, no retailers are following the rates fixed by the joint force and price-monitoring of daily commodities is now totally abandoned.
The prices of rice, edible oil, potato, pulses are on the rise while the prices of vegetables remain stable in the city’s markets. Prices of edible oil and onion have set up a new record, as edible oil is selling at Tk 95 per litre and onion at Tk 70 per kg. Read more…
